Match Preview: Leiston v St Ives Town

St Ives Town take a break from their league programme this weekend as they make the trip to Suffolk to meet Leiston in the Emirates FA Cup First Qualifying Round.

UP FOR THE CUP

Memories are still fresh of the history making FA Cup run that the Ives enjoyed last year when they made it all the way to the fourth and final qualifying round for the first time in their history, only to be eliminated by National League FC Halifax at the Quattro-Tech Westwood Road. If the Ives are going to progress past the first hurdle this year, they will have to be at their very best against a Leiston side who are in the same division sitting in 12th position having won two, drawn two and lost two of their opening six games this season.

IVES TEAM NEWS

The Ives make the trip fresh from a 1-1 draw at Kettering Town on Bank Holiday Monday. The victory looked to be in the bag but Kettering got an equaliser with the last kick of the game to ensure the points were shared. That match came on the back of a 1-0 defeat at home to Leamington last Saturday and after the Bank Holiday matches, the Ives found themselves in 19th position in the table. Boss Ricky Marheineke will be hoping that his team can reproduce the much improved performance against Kettering in what is sure to be a tough tie against a Leiston side who reached the promotion play-offs last season.

INTRODUCING LEISTON

The hosts started the season with a defeat at Halesowen but made up for that with an excellent 2-1 win at home to AFC Telford United. Over Bank Holiday weekend, they defeated Stratford 4-3 and gained a point at home to Needham Market in a local derby on Monday. It was Needham Market who halted the progress of Leiston in the FA Cup last year as the hosts tomorrow lost 3-1 in a first qualifying round tie.
