Ives welcome Arsenal legends for charity match

The Quattro-Tech Westwood Road will be the place to be on Sunday 7 July as teams of legends from St Ives Town and Arsenal take part in a charity football match.

The match will be played to raise funds for the Children’s Charity, Sports Connections Foundation (SCF).  The local charity was launched 14 years ago by former professional footballers and Ives players Junior McDougald and Richard Philp with the aim of using sport to transform the lives of children and young people.

McDougald who also hopes to be playing in the Ives legends team said “I would love to see past and present players, fans, and the local community come together to enjoy what promises to be a fun-filled and action-packed day. I am truly grateful to Paul Reason, Neville Nania, St Ives Town FC as well as Arsenal legends Nigel Winterburn and Jimmy Carter for their support in helping to pull together a team to help us raise awareness and much needed funds for such deserving children & young people who we are privileged to support”.

Since the charity was formed it has overseen the development of four main programmes which include Sporting Wishes – Making dreams come true for children and young people living with life-limiting illnesses. The Inspire Through Sport Programme has been created to help develop positive futures and exciting career pathways with a particular focus on those who face challenging circumstances. The Prokick Schools Challenge Initiative that has so far engaged with over 586,000 children and a small ITS International project that uses sport and education to help guide children away from a life of poverty.

Neville Nania manager of the St Ives Legends team has been delighted by the response of former St Ives players who are excited at the prospect of playing a part in the match against a team that will feature not only Arsenal Legends but special guests too. He commented “Everyone is looking forward to it, we will be trying hard to get Conor Washington back to the Quattro-Tech Westwood Road, which was the scene of his prolific goalscoring exploits before embarking on a wonderful professional football career with teams that include Peterborough Utd, QPR and Rotherham Utd as well as featuring on the international stage with Northern Ireland. We look forward to welcoming back lots of familiar old faces and new ones too for what I know will be an enjoyable day and one that we hope will make a big difference to SCF”.

Heading up the Arsenal squad will be SCF ambassador, Nigel Winterburn who played an incredible 584 games for the Gunners, winning 3 League titles, 2 FA Cups, 1 League Cup and a European Cup Winners Cup.

Winterburn said “I am delighted to be coming to St Ives Town in July with a team of Arsenal legends and special guests to support such a worthwhile charity.  As an ambassador of SCF, I am fully aware of the excellent work that they do and the difference they make to children’s lives.  The event will show how football can come together to raise money for such a worthwhile cause”.

As well as the football, there will be appearances by some special guests with events for all the family happening elsewhere around the ground.  Further event information including details of who will be playing for both teams and ticket prices will be announced nearer the time.

Mascots have a day to remember

Last Saturday was a day to remember for representatives of the St Ives Rangers U9 Black Sox team, who were official matchday mascots for the first team clash with Stratford Town.

Their day included a tour of the Quattro-Tech Westwood Road stadium which included a big round of applause from a packed hospitality suite as they walked through. They then had a pre-match meeting with Ives manager Ricky Marheineke and then accompanied the Ives out onto the pitch ahead of kick-off.

As the pictures below show, they all had a great time and we look forward to seeing them back at the Quattro-Tech Westwood Road again soon.

If you have a youth team that would be interested in being mascots for the day, then please get in touch via our website or message us on social media.

Quiz night success

A quiz night held at the Quattro-Tech Westwood Road on Friday evening proved to be a huge success.

With 20 teams and over 100 people in attendance, the clubhouse was packed as those taking part competed in a quiz hosted by Ives Director of PR, Andrew Dunn. The quiz consisted of eight rounds of ten questions and in a tight contest, it went right down to the wire with the team named ‘Piddlers plus one’ winning on a tie-break and claiming the £100 first prize.

The club would like to thank everyone for taking part and hope they all had an enjoyable evening. The quiz is the first of a number of events coming up at the Quattro-Tech Westwood in the next few months. All the details of those forthcoming events can be found HERE.

Nania returns to the Ives as new Club President

St Ives Town Football Club are delighted to announce the appointment of Neville Nania as their new club president.

Neville is one of the most well-known figures in Huntingdonshire football and returns to the Quattro-Tech Westwood Road having previously been club Chairman for a 10-year term before standing down in 2010 and moving into football management with Godmanchester Rovers as first team manager in the Eastern Counties League. Basically, to fulfil his desire to go back into coaching and management.

His role as President will see him work with the current board of directors in developing the club strategy as well as assisting with raising the profile of the club.

Club Chairman Paul Reason said “I would like to welcome Neville back to the club. The club continues to grow and the fantastic team that we have built behind the scenes has played a large part in the big strides the club has made in the last couple of years. The appointment of Neville will only improve this and his assistance with the overall strategy of the club, and the innovative ideas he will bring, will be a massive benefit to St Ives Town”.

The new Ives president said“ Since moving away from Godmanchester Rovers in 2016 after winning the Hunts Senior Cup as my last game, I took the opportunity to watch my team Crystal Palace as a season ticket holder, which I thoroughly enjoy and spending more time with the family. However, from afar I have seen how St Ives continue to grow as a club under the stewardship of Paul Reason and the rest of his team of volunteers. Indeed, In the past I had an association with St Ives Town for 17 consecutive years as was also Chairman of the St Ives Town Colts club before taking the reigns of the senior club. When Paul asked me to consider taking the role of President, and after discussion with my wife and family, I had no hesitation in accepting and look forward to how I can help the club raise its profile in the years ahead”

Ives go top of hospitality league

St Ives Town have recently gone top of the league for hospitality in the Southern League Premier Division Central.

Points are awarded by fellow member clubs for hospitality on a matchday and with the Ives consistently scoring highly this season, it has seen them take top spot.

Chairman Paul Reason said “This is great news and is reward for the hard work that our hospitality team have put in this year and we hope to sustain our top spot for the remainder of the season.  We have had an increase in matchday sponsors this year who along with visiting officials always compliment us on how good our offering is”.

The club has recently improved it’s hospitality and catering facilities by having a new kitchen installed and would like to thank Graeme Thackeray and HBC Kitchens for donating the kitchen and Dan Coulson and other volunteers who assisted in fitting it.

Anyone who wants to take advantage of our matchday sponsorship should contact paul@rcostings.co.uk for further details

Club news round-up

As we approach Christmas, here is the latest news from around the club

First Team

The Ives have three matches over Christmas starting at Leamington on Saturday followed by a Boxing Day home clash with Kettering Town and then a trip to Stamford on New Years Day. A reminder that the match against Kettering on Boxing Day is a 1:00pm kick-off. The Ives go into these matches 15th in the table, on 24 points which is four places, and four points clear of the relegation zone.

Reserve & A Teams

The reserves are without football action over the festive season which means they will next take to the field on 06 January when they travel to Eynesbury United for an Intermediate Cup fixture. In terms of their league position, the reserves are currently fifth in the Cambs League Senior B Division, seven points off leaders March Town United reserves. It’s a similar story for the A Team as they have no football action until 6 January when they host Houghton and Wyton. The A Team go into Christmas currently sixth in Division 2B of the Cambs League.

Ladies Second Team

The Ladies second team had match action last Sunday. Unfortunately, they fell to a 7-1 league defeat to Histon Development. The next league match for the Ladies second team is on 7 January when they travel to Netherton United.

Youth Update

Our boys under 14 team are the stand out performers of the season so far from the youth set-up. They are currently five points clear at the top of their league having lost only once so far during the current campaign. At the weekend, they beat Leigh Ramblers 4-1 in a cup competition. The only other youth football at the weekend saw a victory for the under 15’s as they progressed through to the next round of the County Youth Cup.

150 Club

The latest winners of the 150 Club were announced at the weekend. As usual, there was prizes for first second and third. First went to Jack Clarke. Second was Peter Chapman and third was Paul Reason. The next draw will be on Boxing Day.

Christmas Draw

Also being drawn on Boxing Day will be the Christmas Draw. Before it is drawn, you will still be able to purchase tickets priced at £1.00 each. These can be purchased from the clubhouse during the game against Kettering Town. A number of prizes will be on offer to the winners.

New Years Eve Tickets

Commercial News

A big thank you to all our commercial partners and to those who have sponsored the club throughout the year. On Saturday for the game against Hitchin, we had a group of Ives fans sponsoring the game who enjoyed our matchday hospitality, which continues to go from strength to strength. On the back of those fans sponsoring a game, we are pleased to say there has been more interest from supporters who want to follow their lead at future home matches. So if you want to do this or know of a group or organisation who wants to sponsor the club in other ways, then please get in contact with Mark Taylor: mark@marktaylormarketing.co.uk.

Volunteers

The club is always looking to recruit more volunteers. There’s always jobs to do or help required around the ground be it on a matchday or during the week. If you have a few spare hours and would like to get involved, then please contact Club Chairman, Paul Reason: paul@rcostings.co.uk.

Programme Articles

We always welcome programme content from supporters. This can be anything from a Birthday mention to some other news. You can also submit any music requests or stadium announcements on a matchday. To do this, please contact stivestownmedia@hotmail.co.uk

And Finally….

The Chairman and Board of Directors would like to thank the fans, volunteers and everyone connected with the club for their support during 2023. Attendances for this season are currently showing an increase and it will be great if this continued into 2024 which we hope will be a successful one for the club. We would like to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
