League: Creak Charity Shield
v
Sawston United v St Ives Town Reserves
Manager Tony O’Donovan and his assistant Simon Jay would of been delighted to see their team leave sawston progressing through to the next round of the CREAKE charity shield.
On a very good playing surface st Ives almost had the perfect start with some nice passing straight from kick off leading to Ben Smith hitting the post from outside the penalty area within the first minute.
Immediately afterwards sawston could of themselves taken the lead with a swift counter attack only to be thwarted by some last ditch defending by the st Ives back four.
Sawston took the lead after an even first thirty minutes with a fine header from a perfectly placed corner kick.
Not to be deterred st Ives got back to their passing game and deservedly equalised when Danilo Corvalho neatly squared the ball for Bailey Baker to fire home from outside the penalty box.
With the scores even at halftime the second half continued in the same fashion with both sides playing good attractive passing football.
As the second half progressed St Ives change of formation started to pay off with them becoming more and more in charge of possession in midfield and creating chances.
With time running out and the possibility of penalties looking a certainty st Ives pressure finally paid off. Danilo Corvalho latching on to a fumble from the home keeper to calmly slot home. Unbridled joy from everyone of the young town team as they celebrated clinching victory with a minute to go.
It may be St Ives that move on into the next round but Sawston played their part in an enthralling match with credit also going to the referee who was excellent throughout.

Papworth v St Ives Town Reserves
Creake Charity Shield – 19th October 2019
Young saints travelled to Papworth on Saturday to take on their first team in the Creake charity shield.
A fine all round performance saw St Ives winning 4-1.
Full use was made of the squad with many away injured and unavailable.
Midfielder Joe Purse deputised magnificently in goal.
After an even first 15 minutes saints started to dominate play with some great passing.
Ben smith opened the scoring after following up on a long range shot that the home keeper spilled to slot home. A second soon followed again from some great passing play with Danilo Corvalho getting on the scoresheet.
Our reserves extended the lead when Ben Smith again broke the papworth defensive line to round the keeper and finish.
Second half again started with some very even passages of play and Papworth took their chance with a close range header.
Not to be deterred the young saints side again went back to some great pass and move football and restored their three goal cushion when Adam Winter finished from close range.
St Ives continued to stand up to the physical battle while still trying to keep to their passing game.
Chances came and went for st Ives to extend their lead as they failed to capatlise and too often didnt work the Papworth keeper.
All credit to Papworth who showed great sportsmanship throughout the game and definitely gave the saints a tough competitive match.
