In a season where bad luck has dogged Ives this game topped most others as the visitors found themselves beaten by the high riding Pics thanks to a goal that I think even the scorer Andre Landell will admit was a 27th minute fluke.

Going into this game on a run of eight games without a win Ives might have expected the worst as they were visiting a team unbeaten in five, almost assured of a play off place and very much hunting down a top three finish to assure themselves a home semi-final in those play offs. However the visitors had received a huge boost of their own ahead of the game with the deadline day signing of last season’s saviour Eddie Brearey from Oxford United. That good news was seriously dampened by the news ahead of kick off that Brearey, the only keeper that had travelled with the squad, had picked up a knee injury pre-game. There was even possibility that he may not be fit enough to start. But despite clearly being somewhat hampered by the injury start he did.

It looked like Brearey may get an early test as Jordan Williams brought down Leon Clarke 25 yards from goal in a central position in only the second minute. Fortunately Ives four man wall did its job staying big to deflect Sam Mantom’s effort wide for a corner. Alex Moore tried to drop the resulting corner in on top of the hobbling Brearey but his defenders came to his aid with Williams rising highest to head the ball clear.

Ives had started with their midfielders closing down Pics men all over the park and that tactic almost brought them reward in 15th minute as Sam Whittall was pressured into a mistake his square pass being cut out by Tyrone Baker who sprinted down the left before a recovery tackle by the desperate Whittall stopped his progress at the expense of a corner. Greg Kaziboni’s in-swinging corner was delivered deep beyond the far post where Ashton Fox had ghosted in, unmarked, but the youngster tried to go for goal from a narrow angle and the ball bounced wide off the body of Whittall. Johnny Herd’s flag kick from the opposite side was met powerfully by Charlie Johnson by the penalty spot but his header flew over the top.

The Pics had the ball in the net in 20th minute but that action only picked up a yellow card for Landell as the striker blatantly stuck out his left hand to knock home Jourdain Masidi’s cross from the right. However it was Landell who had the last laugh as he put the hosts ahead seven minutes later his attempted cross from the right arcing beyond the outstretched hand of the struggling Brearey and finding the top corner of the net. Mantom’s pass to put Landell away down the right was a good one but the striker looked as surprised as everyone else in the ground when his miss hit cross found the net.

But Ives did not crumble and in fact lifted their efforts to ensure that they prevented the smooth passing hosts adding to their lead. The epitome of that determination not to concede more was shown by youngster Luke Harris on the half hour as patient Pics build up had been finished by an incisive ball which had put Mantom clear but the Peterborough United loanee had tracked his man and flung himself across the shot when it came to deflect the ball wide.

Mantom went close again ten minutes before the break as the ball broke to him just outside the box at the end of what looked like a pinball session inside the Ives box with Clarke and Landell both having efforts blocked by the flying bodies of Ives defenders before Mantom fired his effort just over the top as the usually athletic Brearey struggled to get across to cover.

Ives had one half chance to get level before the break a couple of minutes later but keeper Jacob Weaver got down bravely to claim Michael Richens low cross from the right at the feet of Nail Shariff.

Brearey succumbed to his injury at the break and the spectators returned from their half time refreshment to see Ben Toseland proving that he has yet another string to his bow as a utility player and donning the gloves to go between the sticks in a fetching green outfit.

But it was Ives who had the first attempt of the second half only three minutes after the re-start when Shariff got on the end of Herd’s deep cross from the left but the striker failed to hit the target from a narrow angle, and even if he had found the net the assistant’s upraised flag would have chalked it off.

Toseland had the first opportunity to show his ability as a keeper five minutes later and he did very well to quickly leave his line and close down Mantom after the midfielder had been fed through the left channel by Moore. Having got into the right spot the stand in keeper did well to bravely block the shot at close range.

The guys in front of him were also doing their bit working like trojans to ensure that Toseland was not going to get tested to much. In 56th minute Clarke and Mantom combined well just outside the box to set up a shooting opportunity for Landell but Herd put his body on the line to block the shot at point blank range.

Kaziboni came within inches of copying the feat of Landell on the hour. Fed in down the right by Paddy Casey the right winger hung up a cross into the centre that had beaten the fast back peddling Weaver, but the luck was not with him and instead of finding the corner of the net the ball bounced to safety off the top of the crossbar.

At the other end the hosts went close twice inside sixty seconds around the 68 minute mark. Initially Moore played what looked like the perfect ball to set up Clarke just inside the box. But the big centre forward got everything wrong and ended up executing a complete fresh air, the ball then hitting his standing foot to allow Ives to clear. The clearance resulting in the visitors winning a throw well up the pitch but Herd’s long throw was cleared and Clarke looked like his was getting away clear. As Toseland came to meet him the striker unselfishly tried to pick out Landell which just allowed Harris to slide in and block the ball.

A couple more Pics corners followed which again they tried to drop right in on top of the stand in keeper but Toseland did well to get a fist on one of them and Johnson rose powerfully to clear the other to keep the deficit to a single goal.

As time ticked on into the last ten minutes Ives managed to build a little bit of pressure without really testing Weaver. Herd fired a 25 yard free kick into the host’s four man wall in 78th minute. In the last few minutes two Ives corners and two Herd long throws added to that pressure but a clear cut chance did not materialise and the hosts were somewhat relieved to claim the three points at the final whistle.

Fortunately for Ives none of the teams around them picked up a win. This battling performance still gives hope of finding those vital couple of wins which could lift them to a potential point of safety but with the next two games against the top two the most important people in the next seven days could be the physio at Oxford United who we will all hope can work a miracle to get Brearey fully fit and Ives physio Jardaine Patel-Joseph who needs to do a similar job to get Jonny Edwards fit after the Ives leading scorer spent the afternoon on the bench nursing a hot water bottle on a back injury that prevented him joining the fray.

Even the most ardent Pics fans would have been hard pressed to convince themselves, or anyone else, that they deserved to be in front at half time in this game as Ives played some of their best football of the season with a high tempo passing game that ensured that the hosts had to work very hard to stay in the game. A deserved early lead arrived in the twelfth minute courtesy of a cracking strike from Ben Toseland. But despite pressing their hosts into errors their passing generally lacked that crucial final ball and they failed to deal with two Owen Parry long throws into their box late on in the first period to undo their good work in an instant. A much more even second period saw both sides create chances but hosts substitute Danny Glover being the only person to convert one of them.

Another new face arrived in the Ives line up at the start with recent signing from Chesham United Kyle Davison-Gordon coming in at left back with Camron McWilliams moving across to the right and Eniola Agemoh-Davies missing out completely. The changes at the back also saw the versatile Ben Toseland freed up to take a more forward role in the number eleven shirt.

Ives started on a very positive foot with the ball being moved around at pace on Rushall’s 3G surface and it was no real surprise when they went in front in twelfth minute. McWilliams and Dylan Williams combined well on the right with the latter delivering a deep cross to beyond the back post where Toseland managed to head it back into the mix. Urijah Gordon-Douglas rose above the crowd but rather than head the ball towards goal he directed back in the direction of Toseland who met the dropping ball on the volley and fired it home across the keeper into the far corner of the net.

The visitors continued to press and Gordon-Douglas forced Mitchell Clarke into an error in 19th minute but his touch let him down as he closed on goal just allowing home keeper Tom Palmer to sprint off his line and bravely slide in to claim the ball at the big strikers feet.

The hosts first opportunity to deliver a dangerous ball into Ives box came only seconds later as McWilliams was adjudged to have brought down Jourdain Masidi thirty yards out on the left even though the Pics wide man looked to have lost his footing prior to the challenge. Tyler Lyttle decided to go for goal with the free kick which was well blocked by the leaping Ives three man wall.

Ives continued to work hard and move the ball around at pace but without managing to find a telling ball in the opposition’s final third and the next chance of a shot on goal fell to the hosts in 29th minute. Tyrone Ofori cleverly played in Callum Coyle through the left channel but the strikers shot from 20 yards lacked power and was straight at keeper Paul White who made a comfortable save.

With the clock ticking down towards the break and Ives looking comfortable thoughts began to turn to the chance of a warming half time mug of soup. The visitors had already dealt with a couple of long throws from Parry but when another one arrived from the left six minutes from the break they seemed to have switched off allowing Kristian Green to rise highest at the near post and head down just inside the upright to level things up.

Having conceded from one long throw the nerves were certainly jangling when another opportunity to deliver an arching throw was given to Parry from almost exactly the same spot just seconds before the interval. This time the ball went a little further and arrived in the centre of the packed goalmouth. With the number of bodies in there it was impossible to tell who got a touch, suffice to say it was not cleared and the ball arrived at the feet of Ofori at the back post who gleefully prodded it home.

Ives made a half time change with Gordon-Douglas giving way to the pacy Jason Dwumfuo who was no doubt given instructions to run at the hosts defence at every opportunity. But it was the Pics who had the first opportunity of a shot on goal as Parry seized on a poor defensive header from Brett Solkhon but he fired well wide from 25 yards.

Amazingly the first corner of the game did not arrive until 57th minute and it was cleverly laid back to Reece Mitchell to deliver deep to the far post where a back peddling White just managed to punch it away from the waiting crowd at the expense of a second flag kick. This one was met at the back post by Ofori who directed his header just wide.

Ives introduced another debutant in 64th minute as winger Tyrone Baker replaced centre back Callum Milne forcing a re-shuffle with Toseland dropping back and Baker slotting in on the left. The visitors were still very much in this game, but still struggling to find that crucial well timed run or threaded final pass to pick out the run if it came. They were forced into resorting to log range efforts. Ed Hottor blazed a thirty yarder well over in 71st minute after Michael Richens and Toseland had combined well to set up the opportunity. Four minutes later Richens failed to beat the wall with a twenty yard free kick after Baker had been upended cutting in from the left. Toseland was still finding opportunities to get forward and he went closer only ninety seconds later as he was given space to break into before unleashing a dipping thirty yarder that was only inches over the top.

But as Ives struggled to create chances inside the box their hosts showed them how it could be done as only moments later Pics substitutes Danny Glover and Rackeem Reid exchanged passes cutting in from the left. Glover’s final ball picked out Reid at the near post but fortunately for Ives his side footed effort flew just past the post. The visitors were almost caught out again as they tried to play the resulting goal kick out from the back. substitute Nathan Hicks had only been on for a few moments and his poor ball was cut out and fed into the feet of Glover who tested White with a powerful drive from just outside the box that the keeper did well to push away diving full length to his left.

With time ticking down and Ives pushing forward in search of an equaliser they were always likely to leave gaps at the back and a side riding high in the table always seems to find a way to kill off their opponents. Sure enough there were six minutes left on the watch when the Pics did just that and it was Glover who started and finished the move. Initially combining with Tom Thorley to put Reid away down the right then continuing his run into the box before getting on the end of Reid’s low cross pivoting and firing home via the inside of White’s left hand upright.

But even finding themselves two goals in arrears Ives did not get their heads down as they had done earlier in the season and excellent work down the right by Williams saw him get to the bye line before picking out Nabil Shariff arriving at pace at the near post. His flick beat Palmer but deflected to safety off the top of the crossbar.

Overall this was a cracking performance, particularly in the first half. But once again Ives were undone by brief periods when the concentration wains. At this level that is all it takes as any lapse will be punished by the high flyers in this division. With the ultimate test scheduled for Saturday as ex Ives skipper Jimmy Dean brings his table topping Peterborough Sports to Westwood Road. If Ives can find a way of eliminating the errors and play as they did in the opening period it could be a game well worth watching.

An amazing game that had everything in it again ended in frustration for the Ives. A wonderful first half performance saw them more than double their previous tally of league goals for the season but it  was completely undone by some slack defending which allowed the league leading Pics to not only get back into the game but eventually claim all three points with a late winner after Charlie De’ath had seen red for two silly yellow cards only seconds before.

Ives showed no respect for their high flying hosts or their immaculate new 3G surface as they tore into them from the off. Matt Foy on his League debut for the Ives drew a foul out of Orrin Pendley in only the second minute giving Ben Seymour-Shove chance to deliver the ball into the box. His initial kick was knocked out to Jarvis Wilson beyond the far post but the centre back’s curled cross to the back post was headed back into the mix by Tom Wood where Mitchell Clarke did just enough to prevent De’ath heading it home.

Clarke showed that he provided a very potent weapon for the hosts as he hurled a throw into the centre of the box only three minutes later. Pendley rose highest but flicked his header wide of the post.

Ives pace and movement up front was causing the hosts back line a lot of problems in these early exchanges and they continued to threaten. Seymour-Shove won a corner off Pendley in eleventh minute Jack Snelus’s delivered to the near post was knocked back to him. He took a touch and fired in a crisp low drive from a narrow angle that cannoned off keeper Jon Flatt’s legs. The rebound fell to Ben Jackson on the opposite edge and his powerfully struck first timer stung the hands of the fast recovering Flatt as he pushed the ball away.

Ives early pressure continued and three minutes later Charlie Johnson powered a clean header straight at Flatt from ten yards after he got on the end of De’ath’s cross from the right.

This open early period also saw the Pics carve out a few opportunities and they went close twice in two minutes just after the quarter hour. The powerful Levi Rowley found himself in a little bit of space 25 yards from goal and curled in an effort that required a save from Martin Conway. Ninety seconds later the same player found space on the right and delivered a cross to the back post where a stretching Jon Letford could only steer his effort wide.

The opening goal arrived in somewhat controversial circumstances in 24th minute as a long Conway punt almost fell to Foy. The ball rebounded off a defender to Snelus who tried to turn Pendry only to be wrestled to the ground just inside the box. Referee Liam Corbett decided that the challenge had been unfair and pointed to the spot much to the dissatisfaction of the home supporters. Robbie Parker emphatically despatched the resulting spot kick sending Flatt the wrong way much to the delight of Ives travelling faithful.

That delight turned into euphoria four minutes later as Foy doubled the advantage Seymour-Shove cleverly played the ball into his run across the box and ex Cambridge City striker showed his quality as he took a touch before smashing the ball beyond the diving Flatt and into the roof of the net from 20 yards.

To give them confidence Ives needed to hold onto their two goal advantage until half time if possible but that was not to be as the first half entertainment racked up to a new level with three more goals in the remaining fifteen minutes. The two goal cushion only lasted four minutes as De’ath was spotted by referee Corbett grappling with Dan O’Callaghan as the pair waited for a Pics corner in 32nd minute. The eagle eyed official decided that warranted the award of his second spot kick of the afternoon. Rowley made no mistake from the spot beating Conway low to his right to halve the arrears.

Ives advantage disappeared completely three minutes before the break as a cross from the left by Asa Charlton was knocked out to Shaquille Leachman-Whittingham on the right. His low ball into the centre seemed to get tangled in the feet of Letford eight yards out but the visitors defence and goalkeeper all seemed to freeze giving the big striker time to turn and slot the ball home.

Having got level the hosts probably thought they were going on to win this game easily but Ives had other ideas and straight from the kick off they stunned the Pics again as the tricky Snelus jinked his way through before teeing up Parker who unleashed an unstoppable effort from 25 yards that saw the startled Flatt clawing at air high to his right again as the ball flew past him to billow the back of the net and put Ives back in front.

The other noteworthy moment in the run up to the break was a foolish booking for De’ath for kicking the ball away, this was to prove a pivotal moment much later in the game.

Coming out for the second half Ives knew that their job was to keep the Pics quite for the opening 20 minutes, they failed dismally to do that as they allowed the hosts to level things up again only ninety seconds after the re-start in the simplest fashion. Another long throw from Clarke was headed back out to him and his first time clip to the back post picked out an unmarked O’Callaghan who had the simple task of heading home from six yards.

The goal raised the hosts and they lifted themselves again in search of the winner. Three minutes later the overlapping Checkaine Steele managed to get around the outside of Mark Coulson on the right before driving in a cross that rebounded off an Ives defender and fell to Rowley in the centre of the box. His effort was blocked and Leachman-Whittingham following up fired the loose ball wide from a good position.

In spite of conceding a lot of possession Ives were defending well and managed to prevent their hosts from carving out any more chances until twenty minutes from time when another Clarke long throw was headed back to him and in almost identical fashion to the third goal he curled a ball into the centre to pick out Pendley who got between defenders to get in a close range header that flashed wide.

That was a let off for the Ives and they had another lucky escape six minutes later as a Ben Lund snap shot from 25 yards caught out Conway and beat the keeper’s late dive at his near post he was very fortunate that the effort cannoned to safety off the upright.

The visitors had very few forays into enemy territory in the remaining time and their one half chance to grab an unlikely winner came nine minutes from time when Snelus delivered a dangerous in-swinging free kick from the left that was just flicked off Foy’s head by a stretching Clarke.

With time ticking down Ives were trying to manage the game but De’ath took things a little to far as he dallied to long for Mr Corbett’s liking over a throw in right in front of the visitor’s dug out. The official decided that warranted a second yellow taking them down to ten men for the remaining few minutes.

With De’ath trudging disconsolately to the dressing room leaving Ives now one man down in their defensive line the final long throw of the game in the last few seconds delivered deep into the box by Clarke had an added danger. Yet again the visitor’s dealt well with the initial throw but only succeeded in knocking the ball back to the big centre back who had time and space to deliver the ball into the danger zone. O’Callaghan was again the target and his challenge knocked the ball down into the mix where the evergreen Charlton pounced to knock the ball home from point blank range and break Ives hearts. There was just time to kick off again before the final whistle blew on a gut wrenching defeat for Ives.

Rushall Olympic vs St Ives Town

Rushall Olympic 4 St Ives Town 1

Evo-Stik League Southern Premier Division Central – 20-10-18

A beautiful autumn day welcomed the Ives to the lush Dales Lane park unfortunately the visitor’s performance did not match the weather as all of the best aspects of previous games this season seemed to desert them in a single miserable afternoon.

Perhaps it was a reaction to the effort and energy that was expended in the unfortunate defeat to Biggleswade on Tuesday evening but whatever the reason this was Ives most disappointing performance of the season by some margin. Three of the four Pics goals came from a failure of Ives in defending dead ball situations into their box an area which has previously looked so solid up to now.

The hosts showed their attacking intent right from the off as full back Tyler Lyttle found space on the right and delivered a teasing cross that Joe Hood just managed to do enough to prevent Richard Brodie getting on the end of it as the big centre forward had dropped off to find space at the back post.

Ives first opportunity to threaten the Pics goal came midway through the first half as Robbie Parker ran over a free kick on the left corner of the box leaving Hood to deliver a dangerous in-swinger that Joseph Hull was forced to head over his own crossbar to prevent Danny Kelly getting on the end of it. Ben Seymour-Shove delivered the resulting corner from the right and picked out Jarvis Wilson on the edge of the box. His powerful header into the six yard box was palmed off Kelly’s head by keeper Joe Slinn.

As the half wore on the hosts began to get on top without ever really looking threatening although Lyttle was looking to get forward at every opportunity and continued to find a lot of space on the right touchline. He was the main protagonist in effectively winning the game for the Pics as they claimed two goals from corners in three minutes just before the break.

In 42nd minute Lyttle combined well with Ben Lund to carve out a crossing opportunity that Seymour-Shove did well to block at the expense of a corner. Lyttle delivered the resulting flag kick into the centre and Ives somehow managed to lose one of the biggest players in the box as Hull arrived at the back post to simply side foot the dropping ball home from eight yards.

With the half whistle looming the hosts won another corner on the right which Lyttle again delivered catching out Ives who had turned off completely as he pulled the ball back to the unmarked Ashley Sammons on the corner of the box he hung up the ball to the back post where two Pics players were queuing up to finish it Lund got to the front of the queue to head home from close range.

Coming out two down we were hoping for a reaction from the Ives but it was not to be as the hosts continued well on top with Lyttle continuing to terrorise them down the right. He again found space only ninety seconds after the restart and drove in a low cross that deflected off Sam Cartwright at the near post. Hood again had to be alert to complete the clearance at the back post.

Another Lyttle cross caused Ives further problems four minutes later as the visitors struggled to clear at the back post allowing Edwin Ahenkorah to tee up Sammons who curled his 25 yard effort inches wide with the outside of his right foot.

The Pics pressure continued and they went close again twice in the next two minutes. A quick break from an Ives corner saw Ahenkorah get away down the right and hang up a cross to the back post where Kevin Monteiro directed his header from eight yards inches wide. Only sixty seconds later Lyttle again used the acres of space he was still enjoying on the right. This time Lund got between Ives centre backs to direct his header towards the bottom corner of the net forcing Sam Wilson into an excellent save low to his right.

Ives were struggling to get out of their own half at times and the only time that they went close in the early period of the second half was on the hour when Mark Coulson and Parker combined on the left with latter getting to the bye line before hanging up a cross that a stretching Sam Whittall headed up into the air. Ollie Snaith pounced on the dropping ball but fired his powerful volley well wide from a narrow angle.

Whittall had a major impact at the opposite end of the pitch five minutes later as Ives were again caught napping at a dead ball situation. A long free kick was won in the air by Brodie whose header back across the box was picked up by Ahenkorah the number elevens cross back into the mix was deflected home at close range killing off any faint hopes Ives may have had of getting back into the game.

With the game now decided the Pics took their foot of the gas a bit but they still managed to rub more salt into Ives wounds as Owen Wallis brought down substitute Justin Richards as he broke into the box. Referee Simon Brown had a good view of the incident and had no hesitation in pointing to spot. Richards picked himself up and emphatically beat keeper Wilson with the kick burying the ball in the bottom right hand corner as the young stopper went to his left.

Young substitute Dylan Wilson was introduced to replace the ineffective Kelly twenty minutes from time and he brought a bit more urgency into Ives attack grabbing himself a well taken consolation goal five minutes from time Parker slid a ball through the left channel into Wilson’s well timed run and the striker cleverly drew keeper Slinn to him before slotting the ball through the keepers legs from a narrow angle covering defender Whittall made a desperate attempt to keep it out but only succeeded in knocking the ball over the line.

There was still time for Wilson to display his shot stopping abilities again as he plunged to his right to tip Sammons free kick around the post in the dying seconds to prevent even more embarrassment for the visitors.

Rather than have their usual on pitch debrief and warm down it was a sad site as the Ives exited the arena as quickly as possible on the final whistle with their tails well and truly between their legs. This fourth defeat in a row sees them tumble to sixteenth in the table now sitting only four places and three points above the relegation zone. A prompt return to the early season form that brought victories over fancied Tamworth and Royston is now urgently required even if this means a more defensive set up to re-shore up the previously very solid defence. The supporters must be aware that our continued survival at this level is much more about grinding out results that playing pretty football.
