“Saints finish 2013 on a high!”
by Simon Clark
After recent poor results against North Greenford United and Aylesbury, the Saints finished the year with a thumping four nil won at home to bottom of the league; Ashford Town.
The Saints had a perfect start to the game when on 4 minutes, skipper Lee Ellison rose above the Ashford defence to head home an acute Jon Stead free kick from the right hand side. On 21 minutes, their advantage was doubled as Avelino Vieira turned provider as his centre was met by the diving head of Karl Gibbs. Gibbs thought that he had increased his goal tally on the half hour mark when he saw his downward header ripple the back of the net but Referee; David Bryan adjudged there to be a foul.
The Sainst were firmly in control of this match but early into the second period, it was the Middlesex visitors who peppered the Saints goal with Cyril Ocansey looking dangerous with efforts on 60 and 71 minutes. Both efforts were well saved by Barney McLaughlin in the Saints goal.
On 80 minutes, Vieira made it three to the Saints with a simple tap in at the back post after some excellent build up play by Stead and Tom Meechan. To round off an excellent day for the Saints, man of the match; Dan Banister made it 4-0 after Tom Meechan’s clever pull back found Banister in space to finish.
The Saints kick off 2014 on New Years Day when they host Royston Town at ProEdge Westwood Road.
