St Ives Town 2 Potters Bar Town 1
Sponsors Man of the Match by R Costings: David Cobb
The Saints recorded their first victory at Westwood Road since the 21st September with an well fought 2-1 win against their Hertfordshire opponents. They fell behind after just one minute when Sean Grace latched on to a free kick who volleyed home from the edge of the penalty area.
However, the home side dominated the early minutes of the game and their pressure paid off when David Cobb struck, on 11 minutes, into the far corner to equalise for the Saints. Cobb, Karl Gibbs and Jared Cunniff all with good chances hitting the cross bar twice and keeping Tommy Glanville in the Potters Bar goal busy.
Glanville was unable to prevent Cunniff grabbing the second for the Saints on 23 mnutes when his right footed effort crashed the roof of the net. On 25 minutes, Avelino Vieria was in on goal but was thwarted by a close range save by Glanville. Moments later Gibbs had a goal disallowed for offside but at this point the Saints were well and truly in charge.
In the second period, Potters Bar applied pressure on the Saints goal but they were met by resistance from a resilient Saints defence. Jason King saw two efforts go wide of the goal and Cunniff looked dangerous alongside midfielder; Dan Banister. David Cobb was disappointed on 67 minutes as he initially thought he had rounded off his man of the match performance with a second for the Saints.
The Saints held off the pressure in the final ten minutes to run out 2-1 winners and collect all three points. The Saints are now in Cup action on Wednesday night as they travel to Bedford Town in the League Cup.
Our u18’s are in County Cup action with a 10:30 kick off against Powerleague Colts. We hope to see you there.
