St Ives Town 2  Cambridge City 1

Att: 200+

St Ives opened their season in style with a fine 2-1 win over higher division rivals Cambridge City in front of a crowd of over 200 at The ProEdge Stadium on Friday evening.

This was the Club’s first game under the stewardship of their new management team of Ricky Marheinke and Jack Cassidy and the six new signings on view all integrated well with last season’s returnees from the off.

The game was played in an open style throughout with both sides getting the ball down and playing a passing game on an excellent surface.

Both defences were on top throughout the first half which produced few clear cut chances. But the second half was only one minute old when Will Fordham managed to get his head onto a long throw from Ollie Medwynter and his header looped over Zac Barratt in the City goal.

St Ives continued to press forward and two minutes later Barratt had to make a sharp save low to his right to keep out a well struck drive from Ben Seymour-Shove.

City began to work their way back into the game and on 52 minutes Jake Woolley got away on the right. His well placed cross into the box was met by Andrew Phillips whose firm header gave Barney McLaughlin in the home goal no chance.

The game continued to ebb and flow with both teams looking for a winner. The decider came in the 73rd minute when a fine flowing move involving Scott Sinclair and Jon Stead set up a chance for David Cobb who fired home from 12 yards past a diving Barratt.

The excitement was not quite over and Cobb came close to a second on 82 minutes when he latched onto a short back pass and rounded the keeper only to see his shot acrobatically headed off the line by a fast retreating Will Lawton.

Two minutes later McLaughlin was called into action to preserve the lead with a full length diving save to his right to deny Neil Midgley.

Overall both sides will be pleased with the run out and St Ives showed a pleasing new passing style with some very promising debuts for all of the new signings.
