Result: St Ives Town 1 PNS 2

Tuesday 15th July 2014 – Pre-Season Friendly

St Ives Town 1  Peterborough Northern Star 2

Att: 105

An evening which started well and where lots of players got the opportunity to impress the management team ended in defeat for the Ives.

The starting line up had a familiar look to it with eight of the eleven appearing for the Club last season. The early pressure came from St Ives and it was no surprise when on 25 minutes a diving header from Karl Gibbs gave them the lead.

However PNS then began to get into the game and were making inroads into the St Ives defence. On 30 minutes Barney McLaughlin had to be very quick off his line to block a shot from Andy Law after Josh Sanders had rounded two defenders to set him up.

Two minutes later Jordan Lambert preserved the lead with a clearance off the line from Jason Kilbride’s shot which had beaten McLaughlin. From the resulting corner Karl Gibbs similarly had to head away Jonny Clay’s header which was going to sneak in at the far post.

The first half ended with Ben Seymour-Shove rattling the visitors cross bar with a snap shot that left keeper Dan George watching and hoping.

One home change in the first half and five more at half time broke up the flow of the game and St Ives struggled to get any pattern to their play in the second half.

With PNS now on top they deservedly equalized on 53 minutes when McLaughlin made an excellent save from a fierce drive by Jordan Macleod, but Andy Law was first to react to turn in the loose ball.

More changes continued with subs rolling on and off, but PNS continued on top and only an excellent tackle by Alex Merry prevented Jason Kilbride getting away on 67 minutes.

One minute later and McLaughlin again had to be very quick off his line to block a shot from Matt Porter when he looked clean through.

On 76 minutes St Ives made their final change giving a first team debut to Under 18 keeper Luke Mason. However the game was decided seven minutes later when defender Luke Smith brought down a PNS striker as he tried to turn in the box and the referee had no hesitation in pointing to the spot. Kilbride gave Mason no chance with a well struck spot kick low to his left.

Overall a little disappointing after the highlight of last Friday, but there was promise shown by some of the trialists against a solid PNS side.
