Match Report – St Ives Town Ladies 3 March Town Ladies 0

St Ives Town Ladies 3 March Town Ladies 0

Cambridgeshire Womens Premiership Division – 28 January 18

St Ives Town Ladies faced March Town Ladies in much better conditions that the previous week on the 3G pitch, thus avoiding another potential postponement through waterlogging. Ives knew this would be a stern test, March having showed excellent form in games against Newmarket Town and Netherton in recent weeks, and this proved to be the case. The visitors were well organised and disciplined, and breaking through proved difficult for the hosts. After prolonged periods of Ives giving away possession, and then winning it back, a free kick was awarded on the edge of the box for a foul on Georgia Stancombe. Hannah Seymour-Shove stepped up and hit an unstoppable shot which March keeper Tori Sharpe could only get fingertips to. Despite conceding a goal, March kept their composure and frustrated Ives with their disciplined defending, in fact Ives did not trouble Sharpe for the remainder of the first half.

In the second half, and with the stiff breeze in their faces, Ives began to finally get back to their passing game and began to trouble the hosts goal more frequently. Sasha Smith had a chance to double the score with a lofted shot from outside the box, but her shot unluckily hit the far post and rebounded out. Ives finally doubled their lead when Georgia Stancombe ran onto a defence splitting pass and expertly placed her shot past Sharpe to make it 2-0. March continued to defend well, while still getting forward to put St Ives under pressure. However they found the Ives defence, and in particular Ellie Brown, in fine form as the hosts repelled the attacks one by one. Ives gave a debut in the final minutes to young Development team goalkeeper Sophie Marjoram as they continued their policy of developing the youth players from the town. The Ives put some gloss on the score line with a last minute goal, Tierney Coulson following up an initial shot and ensuring the ball was forced home to make the final score 3-0 to St Ives. March Town Ladies certainly have the look of a team rapidly improving, and will no doubt be winning plenty more games this season. Ives player of the match was Ellie Brown for her composed and commanding performance at centre half.
