Man of the Match: David Cobb (St Ives Town)
“Saints go a goal down but Fordham and Gibbs score to steal all three points”
by Simon Clark
In the opening 20 minutes, free kicks from Will Fordham and Lee Ellison were the closest the Saints came in the first half to breaking the deadlock after a disappointing performance in front of a bumper travelling support. David Cobb’s neat volley on 18 minutes also went close but it was the home side, who were sitting in 16th position, that took the advantage on the half hour mark when a corner from the right hand side was flicked on to find the head of Reis Stanislaus who had no troubles in converting from close range.
The Saints came out, rejuvenated for the second half and with some slight offensive changes, they took control from the first minute. On 56 minutes, the assistant had called the referee over to discuss an incident that took place approximately 25 yards from goal and when a case of mistaken identity had been cleared up, Dan Banister’s free kick was met by the towering Karl Gibbs who won the challenge with the home keeper and found himself with a tap in from two yards to equalise.
With the Saints on top, it wasn’t long before the winning goal came. Jared Cunniff had won a free kick on the edge of the penalty area and Will Fordham stepped up to make amends of his previous free kick to curl the ball into the top corner.
Egham pressed the Saints back line in the final ten minutes and young Loanee goalkeeper; Barney McLaughlin was called into to action to deny the Egham equaliser with two fine saves. The Saints held on to take all three points to move back up into 8th position of the Division One – Central.
