Man of the Match: Barney McLaughlin (St Ives Town)
”Two dismissed, two goals, too many chances and an excellent performance from McLaughlin
The Saints travelled South to Middlesex and came up against an offensive Hayes side with several chances bringing some excellent saves from on loan ‘keeper Barney McLaughlin.
In the first half the Saints found themselves under pressure when the forward line of line Nick Kabamba and Laurie Shennan made life difficult especially when Kabamba broke free of 18 minutes but was well matched by the fee of McLaughlin when Shennan thought that he had scored on the half hour mark but McLaughlin was again on hand to deny Hayes the lead.
McLaughlin was again called into action on two occasions to keep the game alive but he was unable to deny Dan Bailey to score the opener just on the half time break. Moments before Hayes had the ball in the net but it was adjudged to be offside.
The Saints would have been disappointed with the limited chances in the first period but amends was made early in the second period when the Saints came out firing and influential players in Jared Cunniff and Jon Stead started to get the ball down and press the Hayes defence.
It was on 71 minutes, a Will Fordham free kick was tipped onto the crossbar but the rebound fell to Avelino Vieira, only two yards out, who tapped the ball home to equalise.
It was the next 10 minutes that saw two sending off’s when the Hayes goal scorer was sent off elbowing Jared Cunniff. Moments later, David Cobb saw red (for two cautions) after a last ditch challenge. The game finished all square but not before McLaughlin was again called into action, preventing Hayes from grabbing the winner.
